Sustainable procurement (buying goods and services with consideration given to their environmental, social and ethical impact) is a key way of reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions as a veterinary practice. This webinar will discuss how to evaluate sustainability as part of procurement decisions and create a Sustainable Procurement Policy, and also cover waste management strategies for reducing waste production - saving both costs and reducing environmental impact.

Learning objectives:

• To understand how to create and implement a Sustainable Procurement Policy
• To appreciate how to implement a waste management system to reduce waste production

Tim Mair has been an equine vet for over 40 years, working in both practice and academia. He currently works at Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic in Kent, and is Equine Veterinary Director of CVS. He is a past president of BEVA and is editor of BEVA’s clinical journal Equine Veterinary Education. He considers himself a “jack of all trades”, but has particular interests in soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and advanced imaging. Along with many others, he is actively promoting sustainability actions both in his own practice as well as in CVS and BEVA.

Becky Sedman graduated from Liverpool in 2018 and currently works for a small animal referral hospital in Yorkshire. She previously completed the Business Sustainability Management course with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, worked as the Sustainability Advisor for VetPartners and is the current Chair of the Vet Sustain Greener Veterinary Practice working group. Becky has practical experience of implementing an environmental management system and making procurement decisions in a large first opinion veterinary hospital, whereby they successfully achieved the highest level Investors in the Environment award.
